Who’s buying the Trader Joe’s Mini Tote bags?
In 2025, 9.6% of Trader Joe’s shoppers—3.4% of total U.S. households—purchased a Trader Joe’s Mini Tote bag. This encompasses multiple varieties, including the classic mini totes, insulated mini totes, Halloween mini totes, and pastel mini totes. Mini tote buyers were much more engaged at the retailer than the typical Trader Joe’s shopper. They spent an average of $1,356 at Trader Joe’s in 2025—2.6 times more than the average shopper—driven by more frequent trips (32 annually vs. 12). While the totes aren’t necessarily bringing in net-new shoppers, they’re highly appealing to Trader Joe’s most loyal customers.
In general, Trader Joe’s shoppers skew younger and higher income than the average U.S. shopper. They’re also more likely to be Asian and to live in urban areas. TJ’s mini tote buyers amplify the demographic skews of the retailer’s core shopper base. Compared to the average Trader Joe’s shopper, mini tote buyers are 17% more likely to be Millennials, 9% more likely to be high income, 96% more likely to be Asian, and 17% more likely to live in cities.

Why are shoppers buying Trader Joe’s Mini Totes?
Novelty and aesthetics drove many TJ’s mini tote purchases. The top reasons shoppers cited for buying a mini tote were thinking it was cute/stylish (50%), to give as a gift (44%), because it felt like a “fun find” or a treat (34%), or because it was inexpensive and felt worth trying (31%). Gift giving was much more popular among 2026 mini tote buyers, the majority of whom bought the pastel mini canvas totes. Mini tote buyers reported feeling happy (58%), excited (33%), or trendy (24%) after their purchases.

Are buyers reselling their Trader Joe’s Mini Tote bags?
While much of the online hype surrounding TJ’s mini totes centers on high resale prices—with some listed on eBay for hundreds or thousands of dollars—very few buyers are participating in these behaviors. Only 4% of buyers purchased a mini tote from Trader Joe’s with the intention of reselling, and only a third of those individuals had successfully resold a bag at the time of responding to our survey. Among those who did resell, they received an average of $5.79 per bag, only about twice the original ticket price, and far from the expensive listings capturing media attention.

How are shoppers finding out about Trader Joe’s Mini Totes?
Over half (54%) of mini tote buyers said the “viral” nature of the bag influenced their decision to buy—21% said it was a major factor and 33% a minor factor. Gen Z and Millennial buyers were much more likely to cite virality as influential (68% and 58%, respectively). 16% of buyers were not aware that the bag was viral before purchasing. Most buyers initially found out about the totes by seeing them in the store (46%), followed by social media (29%) and word-of-mouth (26%). 2026 buyers were also more likely to know about the tote bags from previous releases (23%).

What was the purchase experience like for Trader Joe’s Mini Tote buyers?
Videos of long lines and in-store chaos dominated social media following the latest mini tote drop. However, survey insights show this was not the experience for most buyers. Over half (59%) of buyers purchased their bag during a normal Trader Joe’s grocery run, and 56% said they experienced normal wait times for the day and time they visited. Two-fifths (42%) of buyers said they waited longer than normal to enter the store and/or to check out, but even with these slightly longer wait times, 68% of buyers waited 15 minutes or less for their purchase. Only 2.3% of mini tote buyers waited an hour or more, though that number rose slightly to 3.1% among the latest wave of 2026 buyers.
Some buyers took added measures to secure a mini tote, including 22% who went to the store early or right when it opened, 18% who asked employees about restocks, 17% who visited multiple Trader Joe’s locations to find a bag, and 17% who asked friends and family to keep an eye out for the bags on their behalf.

How are buyers using their Trader Joe’s Mini Tote bags?
Most mini tote owners are using their bags for grocery shopping and running errands (41%), as an everyday bag/purse (30%), or keeping it as a collectable (20%). Many also shared that they’re using them as lunch bags or Easter baskets. Nearly a third (30%) of TJ’s mini tote buyers currently own five or more of these bags, emphasizing both their collectable nature and affordability. When asked what they liked most about their mini totes, buyers mentioned the cute design, compact size, affordability, and versatility.
