Golden Globes Commercials Are Super Bowl Worthy
Whether your favorite part of the Golden Globes this year was Lady Gaga’s matching hair and dress, or the fact that Netflix blew everyone else away with five total awards, one other thing stood out at the awards show this year – the commercials. Advertisers such as Pepsi and Walmart debuted commercials you would be more accustomed to seeing during the Super Bowl than the Golden Globes.
Pepsi’s 60-second spot resembled a movie trailer with flashy graphics and superior theater-style quality. William H. Macy plays a janitor who decides to go explore a space invasion outside and ends up sharing his can of Pepsi with a furry gremlin-like alien.
Walmart’s Golden Globes commercial began their 2019 grocery pickup campaign. The retailer worked with different Hollywood studios to be able to use famous vehicles from movies and tv shows in their campaign. We’re talking the Jeep from Jurassic Park, the Flintstones’ car, Cinderella’s carriage, the Batmobile, Transformers’ Bumblebee, Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, Ghostbusters’ Ecto-1, K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider – you name it. Walmart U.S.’ chief marketing officer Barbara Messing says the ad is the “biggest and first-ever cross-platform national marketing campaign for Walmart Grocery Pickup.”
Netflix, on the other hand, was busy throwing out their two cents on Twitter during the entire Golden Globes broadcast.
Although the Golden Globes don’t snag as many viewers as the Oscars or the Super Bowl, they still capture the attention of many eyes. To compare, in 2018 the Golden Globes had 19 million viewers, while the Oscars had 26.5 million. The Super Bowl, however, had a whopping 103.4 viewers – which is why many advertisers like to place their bets during the big game, even if it means a bigger bet!
